Early access to super
Using super for dental treatment
In limited circumstances, you may be able to apply to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds for eligible dental treatment. Approval is separate from your clinical assessment and is not guaranteed.
When might early access be considered?
Compassionate release has strict eligibility rules. The ATO considers applications for specified expenses where you have no other way to pay. Some dental treatment may qualify; cosmetic dental work does not.
Check the current ATO requirements before relying on super to fund treatment.

Your clinical assessment
Discuss your treatment needs, alternatives, risks and likely costs with your clinician. Ask what treatment records or quotes may be available.
Your application
Use the ATO's official guidance to check the application requirements. A treatment recommendation does not establish eligibility for release.
What to check before you apply
Supporting evidence is required. Check the current ATO guidance for the documents that apply to your circumstances.
- Read the current eligibility and evidence requirements
- Understand the proposed treatment and what the quote includes
- Check which supporting documents you need and who can provide them
- Ask your super fund about its release process
- Consider the financial consequences before making a decision
Questions about your finances
Before deciding, ask how a withdrawal would affect your retirement savings, whether tax would apply and whether there are other ways to meet the cost. Seek independent financial advice if you need help weighing the implications.
